about Dance

ance is also used to describe methods of non-verbal communication (see body language) between humans or animals (bee dance, patterns of behaviour such as a mating dance), motion in inanimate objects (the leaves danced in the wind), and certain musical forms or genres.

Definitions of what constitutes dance are dependent on social, cultural, aesthetic, artistic and moral constraints and range from functional movement (such as Folk dance) to virtuoso techniques such as ballet. In sports, gymnastics, figure skating and synchronized swimming are dance disciplines while Martial arts 'kata' are often compared to dances.

Dance can be directly participatory, social or performed for an audience. It can also be ceremonial, competitive or erotic. Dance movements may be without significance in themselves, such as in ballet or European folk dance, or have a gestural vocabulary symbolic system as in many Asian dances. Dance can embody or express ideas, emotions or tell a story.
Choreography is the art of creating dances, and the person who does this is called a choreographer.

Bangkok Dance Fever

It's a little after six o'clock in the evening. The inspiring 'chai yo!' (cheers!) at the end of the Thai national anthem seems to be a signal to the health-conscious crowds gathered around a raised platform behind the statue of King Rama VI. People of all ages are stretching as the dance instructor takes to the stage. As soon as the music starts to fill the atmosphere of Lumpini Park, the crowd begins to move synchronously to the rhythm...

Meanwhile, at the BTS walkway adjoining MBK to Siam Square, a group of B-boys in baggy clothing and excessive accessories are spinning on their heads to the latest 50 Cent. Simultaneously, on the corner of Ratchaprasong junction not very far away, lavishly dressed Thai classical dancers are performing 'ram kae bon' (the dance performed by worshippers to reward the deity for granting their wishes) at the incense-infused Erawan Shrine before the image of the four-faced Lord Brahma.

Welcome to Bangkok, the city that's constantly on its feet and home to the graceful and interpretative Thai dance, which has played an indispensable part of Thai life from historical times to the present day. Each of the four regions of Thailand has its own folk dances that are usually associated with agricultural and social activities, such as rice planting, harvesting, festivals, and religious celebrations. Characteristically, Northern dances are elegant and slow-paced, whereas those of the South and Northeast tend to be more active and fun-filled.

Dancing is a great way to work up a sweat while having fun at the same time. The freedom of movement is liberating, and allows you to express individuality. Bangkok has plenty of dance schools which offer various kinds of classes - from belly-dancing and ballet to striptease and salsa - while some specialise in one certain type of dance. Most trendy fitness centres also offer various types of dance classes. For late-night (dirty) dancing venues, have a look at our Nightlife section.
